Emulsifiers for production of Micro-surfacing Emulsions and Polymer Modified Bitumen Emulsions :
Micro-surfacing being a highly specialized and exceptionally performing cold-mix "thin surfacing", requires high quality raw materials during application. The prime requirement of proper mix time in machine and quick setting, fast cohesion development for allowing traffic on paved surface quickly after application, demands a precise balance of different physical and chemical properties specially in Micro-surfacing grade Bitumen Emulsions. Since the Micro-surfacing emulsions are SBR / Natural Rubber Latex modified, they require special emulsifiers compatible with synthetic and natural rubber latex, providing proper mix time and fast cohesion development shortly after application on road surface. By virtue these emulsifiers are of Cationic type.
However, since the mix and set time of Micro-surfacing slurries largely depends on the quality and availability of clean graded aggregates near the project site, there is always a need to formulate the modified bitumen emulsion based on properties of these aggregates. Accordingly there are different grades of Emulsifiers available to produce suitable modified bitumen emulsion for aggregates having highly to low reactivity. Also to provide faster cohesion, normally a bitumen additive is used during production of Micro-surfacing emulsion.

Now a days the latex modified bitumen emulsions (PME) are also used for surface protection of airport runways and asphalt pavements as seal spray and fog seal. They provide longevity to these pavement and address the immediate issues of ravelling and chip loss.

Emulsifiers for Micro-surfacing Emulsions
Based on reactivity profile of graded aggregates, the following grade of emulsifiers are suitable*:
(1) Emulsifiers for low reactivity aggregates: PSEM-CQS-D2
(2) Emulsifiers for Medium reactivity aggregates: PSEM-CQS-T2
(2) Emulsifiers for Highly reactive aggregates: PSEM-CQS-T3

*It should be noted that generally no emulsifier is suitable to produce Micro-surfacing grade emulsion if the properties of graded aggregates are beyond the requirements of ISSA Technical Bulletin A143 or the Methylene Blue Test values are above 10 showing heavy clay contamination.
Description :
“PSEM-CQS-D2” is an optimum dose emulsifier for production of both synthetic rubber (SBR) and Natural Rubber (NR) Latex modified Cationic Bitumen Emulsions suitable for micro-surfacing with low reactivity aggregates and for faster setting PME emulsions. Since this product is thick pasty liquid in consistency, so the doses can be done manually or using dosing pumps capable of handling thick liquids during emulsion production. Emulsions made using standard and optimized dose of this product show longer storage stability and fast setting in field.
Physical Properties :
“PSEM-CQS-D2” is thick pasty liquid at room temperature with characteristic ammoniacal odor. This product produce thick solution when mixed with cold and hot water, which becomes thin upon addition of hydrochloric acid. This product is miscible with polar & hydrocarbon solvents. In recommended doses, it does not have any significant effect on physical properties of bitumen used for production of emulsions. This emulsifier provides a wide choice for production of micro-surfacing and spray PME grade latex modified cationic bitumen emulsions with dose dependent mix and setting profile for custom made micro-surfacing emulsions. This product helps in achievement of testing goals of the micro-surfacing mixes and does not have any bad effect on final properties of application. For activation of this emulsifier concentrated hydrochloric acid is recommended as economical and better choice. The final pH of water solution before making emulsion must be checked and adjusted between 2 to max 1.5. At this pH, “PSEM-CQS-D2” has highest micellization in soap solution favoring better stable emulsion. A suitable cohesion development additive (e.g.: PSEM-EA-600) is recommended to be mixed with bitumen before making emulsion, that also helps in easy milling and lower particle size distribution favoring better storage stability.

(Bitumen Additive to improve Wet Cohesion of Micro-surfacing Emulsions)
Description :
“PSEM-EA-600” is an optimum dose wet cohesion improvement additive cum milling aid for mixing with bitumen before production of both synthetic rubber (SBR) and Natural Rubber (NR) modified Cationic Bitumen Emulsions suitable for micro-surfacing. This product is a high viscosity liquid. This product helps in easy milling, reduced colloid mill load during production of modified emulsions, longer storage stability of emulsion and fast cohesion development of micro-surfacing mix in field.
Physical Properties :
“PSEM-EA-600” is a high viscosity yellowish brown clear liquid at room temperature with characteristic odor. This product is not soluble in cold and hot water but freely miscible with hot bitumen. In recommended doses, it helps in easy milling of emulsion in colloid mill during production of modified bitumen emulsion and provide narrow particle size distribution favoring better storage stability.
